Cincinnati Reds Promote RHP; Option Struggling Reliever

The Cincinnati Reds have been busy adjusting their roster, with several players moving up and down between the major league team and Triple-A Louisville.

The most recent move saw right-handed pitcher Kevin Herget selected from Triple-A Louisville to join the major league roster, providing additional bullpen depth.

Although Herget struggled in his MLB debut with the Tampa Bay Rays last year, he had an impressive record with Triple-A Durham, posting a 2.95 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with a 9.2 K/9 over 97.2 innings.

The Reds hope he can replicate these numbers for them this season. To make space for Herget on the 40-man roster and active roster, the Reds designated Bennett Sousa for assignment and sent Joel Kuhnel down to Triple-A Louisville.

Kuhnel had given up three runs in two innings of relief against the Chicago Cubs before his demotion, but it's likely he will be given another chance in the majors soon, as he had made the Opening Day roster. Photo Credit: Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK
