Detroit Tigers Sign Veteran Pitcher; Underwent Tommy John Six Months Ago
The Detroit Tigers have signed left-handed reliever Jose Alvarez to a minor league contract.
The 33-year-old veteran southpaw underwent Tommy John surgery last September and is expected to miss the entire 2023 season.
However, he will conduct his rehabilitation under the supervision of the Tigers' staff and could potentially remain with the organization in 2024, where he will challenge for a spot in the big-league bullpen.

Alvarez has a solid track record in the majors, with a 3.47 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 360 strikeouts across 420.2 innings and 447 appearances (including eight starts) dating back to 2013.
He appeared in 21 games for the Giants in 2022, recording a 5.28 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 15.1 innings.
Despite his recent injury, the Tigers are taking a chance on Alvarez's talent and experience, hoping he can make a strong comeback and bolster their bullpen in the future. Photo Credit: Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports
