Cardinals Veteran Starter Out Several Weeks After Injury During Workout
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright will begin the 2023 baseball season on the injured list due to a groin strain, according to reports.
The 41-year-old right-hander reportedly suffered the injury during a workout with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday.
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said RHP Adam Wainwright strained his groin during a weight room workout on Tuesday prior to the WBC championship game.

Marmol said Wainwright will likely miss “several weeks.”
While Wainwright just pitched four innings in a win over Cuba in the WBC semifinals on Sunday, he had shown diminished velocity throughout the spring, so the injury gives him some extra time to build up his arm strength.
However, Wainwright's absence will force the Cardinals to change up their rotation for the start of the season.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol told Denton that Wainwright is likely to miss "several weeks," and that Jake Woodford will take his spot in the rotation.
