Boston Red Sox Set Their Opening Day Catcher Duo
The Boston Red Sox have made some roster decisions regarding their catchers for the upcoming 2023 season.
Jorge Alfaro, who attended camp as a non-roster invitee, has been reassigned to minor-league camp and will start the season at Triple-A Worcester.

Although Alfaro had a stronger track record in the majors compared to Reese McGuire and Connor Wong, Boston opted for the latter two as their preferred options at catcher.
The team appears to be placing a higher value on defensive skills rather than offensive potential when it comes to their catching options.
It is worth noting that Alfaro had an opt-out clause in his minor-league deal, but he couldn't find a better MLB roster spot and will remain with the Boston organization for now.
The team has decided to keep him within the organization to work on his receiving skills, despite his contract allowing him to seek opportunities elsewhere if he wasn't given a major league chance.
ROSTER UPDATE: Jorge Alfaro will remain with the Red Sox in AAA, per @ChrisCotillo.

Does not look like Alfaro will use his upward mobility clause now, but he does have opt outs on 6/1 and 7/1 if he’s not on the roster by then. pic.twitter.com/IarCbGhsj7
In summary, the Boston Red Sox have chosen Reese McGuire and Connor Wong as their catching duo for the upcoming regular season, with Jorge Alfaro starting the season at Triple-A Worcester.
