Pittsburgh Pirates Designate Pitcher for Assignment
The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated Zach Thompson for assignment. This move is in response to Rich Hill officially being signed by Pittsburgh.
Thompson was acquired by the Pirates last season from the Miami Marlins as a part of the Jacob Stallings trade. Now, a piece of that move is already off of Pittsburgh's 40-man roster so quickly. Now Pittsburgh will have until the end of the week to either trade Thompson or place him on waivers.
Thompson struggled in 2022, so that likely played a notable role in the Pirates' decision to move on from him. In 29 games, he had a 3-10 record to go along with a 5.18 ERA in 29 games. It was certainly a major step in the wrong direction for him, as he had a 3.24 ERA in 26 games as a rookie the year before.
Nevertheless, teams looking for some pitching depth could consider bringing in Thompson from here.
