The Giants needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly-signed reliever Luke Jackson and Marte drew the short straw.
Marte posted a 5.44 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 44 strikeouts over 48 innings last season for the Giants. The twenty-seven-year-old right-handed pitcher will give the Phillies some extra relief depth.
The Giants acquire reliever Erik Miller in exchange.
Miller is a former fourth-round pick by the Phillies in the 2019 MLB Draft and was the team's seventh-ranked prospect. Last season, between Double-A and Triple-A, the left-handed pitcher posted a solid 3.54 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 62 strikeouts over 48.1 innings.
It's a solid move for the Giants.
