New No. 1 2B Prospect In Baseball For 2023
As we approach a new season, MLB Pipeline has updated its prospects list for the 2023 season. We're running down the top players at each position. First base saw the Boston Red Sox top prospect take No. 1 honors, now we move on to second base.
The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to add to their young stockpile of exciting talent, as Termarr Johnson comes in as the top second-sacker prospect going into '23.
The Bucs took him with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, and Pipeline says he has "the makings of a perennial All-Star... Scouts considered him to be the best high school hitter in years."

-“The best pure prep hitter in decades”
-“Some scouts give him top of the scale 80 grades”
-“A combination of Wade Boggs’ plate discipline and Vladimir Guerrero Sr. bat to ball skills”
-“Could be a 25-30 homer threat in the big leagues”

He's been compared to a combination of Wade Boggs and Vladimir Guerrero Sr. for his plate discipline and bat-to-ball skills, respectively.
He's just 5'7", but is said to pack a powerful punch, and should develop power in the 25-30 HR range in the future.
It would certainly be the most unique keystone combination in baseball history, with one full foot of height difference between Johnson and his potential double-play partner of the future, the imposing 6'7" Oneil Cruz.
Johnson played in Rookie ball and A Ball in 2022, but only got in a total of 82 plate appearances. His ETA at the major league level is 2025.
