It's a minor league deal for the 27-year-old, worth $1M if he's in the majors. Smeltzer has spent the past four seasons with the Twins, mostly in the rotation. He posted a 3.99 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP in 19 starts and 15 relief appearances with Minnesota since 2019. He's pretty evenly effective whether as a starter or out of the bullpen.

I think this is a name that we need to look at closely as Spring Training goes on. Had a nice season in 2022 despite a 5.23 FIP. pic.twitter.com/Dbbuq3zSCF
In 2022, he had a 3.71 ERA in 12 starts and three bullpen outings, with a 1.22 WHIP.
Control is his calling card, as he doesn't strike out a lot of batters, but keeps the walks to a minimum as well.
The Marlins, of course, have a talented and deep rotation, so whether he makes the club out of spring training could be based on an opening in the bullpen.
