Chicago Cubs Outright Catcher
Cubs roster moves:
— Patrick Mooney (@PJ_Mooney) January 6, 2023
• PJ Higgins was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa after clearing waivers.
• Alfonso Rivas was granted his unconditional release.
• Brad Wieck signed a two-year, minor-league deal.
• Dom Nunez signed a minor-league deal with an invite to major-league camp.
In 74 games last season, Higgins slashed an underwhelming .229/.310/.383, with six home runs, 30 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He fared much better in the minors, however, slashing a fantastic .417/.500/.1.069 line, with a home run, 17 RBIs, one stolen base and nine runs scored across 72 at-bats.
The twenty-nine-year-old will provide the Cubs with some additional organizational catching depth, that is, if he doesn't elect free agency.
