Trey Mancini Has Serious Suitor In National League

Trey Mancini got his World Series ring. Now he's got his free agency for the first time in his career. After 5½ seasons in Baltimore, the Orioles dealt him to the Houston Astros at the trade deadline. At the age of 31, he's free to choose his next destination, and one team that's been repeatedly linked to him this offseason is the Chicago Cubs.

Mancini, of course, is one of the feel-good stories of baseball in the past few years, after his successful return from Stage 3 colon cancer in 2020.

After missing that shortened season, he came back with two solid years for the O's, and heads into this winter coming off a 2022 season in which he had a .710 OPS with 18 HR and 63 RBIs. He's capable at first base, but can also be a legit option at DH.

For the Cubs, they have been considering installing prospect Matt Mervis at first base, coming off a huge minor league season in which he blasted 36 HR with 119 RBIs and a .984 OPS. But having a veteran like Mancini available in case Mervis or other options like Alfonso Rivas and PJ Higgins aren't quite ready to take the job could be crucial.
