San Diego Padres Sign Veteran Infielder

The San Diego Padres have signed Matt Carpenter to a one-year, $6 million contract. The deal also comes with a 2024 player option that could get him an additional $6 million.

After a disastrous 2021 season with the St. Louis Cardinals that saw him bat .169 in 130 games, Carpenter was let go by the only organization he ever knew. He then went on to sign with the New York Yankees and completely got his career back on track with one of the best feel-good stories of the year. In 47 games with the Bronx Bombers, he had 15 home runs, 37 RBIs, and a .305 batting average. Now, after a year like this, he has earned this great contract with the Padres.

With this move, the Padres have added a bit more pop to their lineup, and Carpenter will serve as a potential DH option. It will be intriguing to see if he can carry over the magic he had this past season with the Padres in 2023.
