The Jays reportedly "love" Nimmo, according to Morosi. And he would certainly fill their need for both a left-handed hitter and a center fielder. But with his price tag going up by the day, it'll be a big-spending battle between at least four teams to land the star on-base machine.
Morosi also listed the incumbent New York Mets, the San Francisco Giants, and the Seattle Mariners as teams to watch in the Nimmo sweepstakes.
When the offseason began, experts were pegging Nimmo for a 5-year deal just north of $100M. The latest rumblings have the soon-to-be 30-year-old center fielder in line to land a six-year deal worth at least $150M, or even higher.
The 7-year Mets veteran has an incredible .385 lifetime on-base percentage and an .826 OPS, with a .269 average.
The Mets are desperate to keep their leadoff man or they'll have a gaping hole to fill in the outfield and at the top of the order.
The Giants still have hundreds of millions to spend after losing out on Aaron Judge, and the Mariners are also still looking to make a big free agent splash.
If the Blue Jays intend to compete in Nimmo's market, execs Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins will need to put on their big boy pants to play with these big spenders.
