Padres Discussing Contract Restructure With Pitcher
He's a valuable pitcher for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres are reportedly talking with pitcher Nick Martinez about restructuring his contract.
Martinez pitched both in relief and as a starter this past season, but had significantly more success pitching out of the bullpen.
The Padres and Nick Martinez have discussed the possibility of restructuring Martinez's contract. It would be relatively surprising if he doesn't end up staying — whether before or after tomorrow's opt-out deadline — but his playoff performance did not hurt his potential market.

Martinez has three player options starting in 2023, and it wouldn't be much of a surprise if the Padres try to lock the thirty-two-year-old up rather than lose him in free agency.
This past season, Martinez held a 3.47 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 95 strikeouts over 106.1 innings of work. He made 10 starts and 37 relief appearances.
If Martinez does end up hitting free agency there will be plenty of interest, but it seems unlikely that San Diego doesn't find a way to keep the right-handed pitcher a Padre.
