New York Yankees Claim Pitcher Off Waivers
The New York Yankees have added to their pitching depth, claiming Junior Fernandez off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Fernandez spent this past season split between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pirates, where he put together a 0-0 record to go along with a 2.41 ERA in 16 appearances. With Pittsburgh specifically, he did not allow a single run in three games. Unfortunately, this was surprisingly not enough for him to maintain his spot on the Pirates' 40-man roster. Instead, he is now a Yankee heading into 2023.
This has the potential to be a low-risk, high-reward waiver claim if Fernandez can keep up his solid stuff throughout the entirety of the season. The potential to be a reliable reliever is there, so let's see how he performs with a high-pressure franchise like the Yankees.
