MLB Rumors: Shocking Name NOT Among Mets’ Top Own Free Agent Priorities
The Mets are prioritizing (Edwin) Diaz and Brandon Nimmo above all other internal free agents, and expect to maintain open and consistent communication with Diaz once free agency begins the morning after the conclusion of the World Series.
Martino reports that the team will begin negotiations with Diaz, the top closer in baseball, the moment free agency opens. Nimmo, being the top center fielder on the market, and a critical part of the team both in center and as a table-setter at the top of the lineup, will get premium treatment as well.
Both players are expected to command long-term contracts that will crack the $100M mark. Diaz posted 32 saves with insane numbers such as a 1.31 ERA and 17 K/9. Nimmo, finally healthy once again, put up another impressive .367 on-base percentage, along with an .800 OPS, 102 runs, 16 HR and a league-leading seven triples.
deGrom, while a 2-time Cy Young winner and one of—if not the—greatest pitcher of this generation, will be 35 next season, and his desire for a multi-year contract at record numbers may just be making the Mets think twice.
deGrom, no doubt, has the Max Scherzer contract on his radar. Mad Max signed a 3-year deal with the Mets last offseason for a record-breaking AAV of $43M.
In addition to Diaz, Nimmo and deGrom, the Mets' free agent list includes:
- Chris Bassitt
- Carlos Carrasco
- Taijuan Walker
- Adam Ottavino
- Seth Lugo
- Trevor May
- Mychal Givens
- Tyler Naquin
