MLB Rumors: NL Central Team Expected To Be Big Players For Star Shortstop
Add the Chicago Cubs to the list of teams to be in the mix for the Shortstop Sweepstakes. MLB Insider Jon Heyman writes, "folks expect the Cubs to be serious players for a shortstop this winter."
Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer says he feels there is “real sense of momentum [here]” after the Cubs' solid second half. He “absolutely” wants to field a competitive team in 2023. Translated (Cubs fans hope): that means they're ready to spend.
“I look at the shortstop situation kind of the way you look at the draft,” president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said at the GM meetings on Wednesday, “which is, if you drafted a shortstop every year you’d be in good shape. The best defenders usually play shortstop, the best athletes often play shortstop, those are guys you can move around.”
Nico Hoerner had a breakthrough season on the North Side, playing short. But the Cubs could easily move him to 2B, just as natural a position for him.
