MLB Rumors: 3 Potential Destinations For Jose Abreu

Jose Abreu has been a pro's pro in his nine seasons with the Chicago White Sox. Consistent production year after year, a clubhouse leader, and as durable as they come. He's played less than 150 games only two times in his career.

Here's the latest breakdown of his top suitors.

San Diego Padres

The Padres have a hole at first base, a position they've had trouble filling adequately over the years. It was just this week that we learned that Abreu is a top priority for the Friars.

MLB Insider Jon Morosi says that sources have told him that Abreu has spoken with the Padres this month.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs are desperate for a big bat in the middle of their order, and they have an opening at first base. Abreu, of course, wouldn't even have to change his address moving to the North Side. There have been rumors during the early stages of this offseason that the Cubs are certainly interested in Abreu.

Cubs insider Bruce Levine has been on the 'Abreu to the Cubs' bandwagon for some time. "If they get their way, the Cubs will act quickly in the Abreu sweepstakes in free agency.

They do have prime 1B prospect Matt Mervis coming in after a huge minor league season, but the Cubs want to thrust themselves back into contention now, so entrusting a rookie at first base on a daily basis might not be the way to go.

Houston Astros

Yuli Gurriel's days in Houston might be over, as he hits free agency at the age off 38 after an unproductive season. Abreu is no spring chicken himself, at 35, but his metrics still indicate he's at the top of his game, with a .378 on-base percentage and an .824 OPS. The Astros have interest.
