Houston Astros Parting Ways With Reliever
Will Smith's $13 million option with the Houston Astros has been declined. As a result, he is now a free agent.
Smith split this season between the Atlanta Braves and Houston, where he had a 0-3 record to go along with a 3.97 ERA. Yet, after joining the Astros, he had more success, as he had a 3.27 ERA in 24 games. Still, that was not enough for him to earn his expensive club option, so now he will be testing his luck on the open market.
Smith will surely get interest as a free agent, as he is a solid reliever with plenty of experience. In 513 career games, the one-time All-Star has put together a 31-34 record and 3.59 ERA. It will be intriguing to see how he improves upon these stats in 2023 from here.
