Detroit Tigers Claim Catcher Off Waivers
The Detroit Tigers have claimed Michael Papierski off of waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.
Papierski was recently designated for assignment by the Reds, but he has now found a new home with the Tigers. The 6-foot-3 catcher served as a backup for the San Francisco Giants and then the Reds this season, where he had one home run, four RBIs, and a .143 batting average in 39 games. Overall, it is fair to say that he struggled at the plate, but it was also his rookie year.
Papierski will likely be a candidate to be the backup catcher for Detroit next season. If not, he will be a serviceable call-up option when injuries arise during next season. Either way, the Tigers have added to their catching depth, and that's never a bad thing.
