Varland, a St. Paul native drafted out of Concordia in 2019, is the reigning Twins minor league pitcher of the year.
He'll be the first Twins pitcher ever to debut with a start at Yankee Stadium.
The twenty-four-year-old has posted a solid 3.06 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a strong 146 strikeouts over 126 innings in the minor leagues this season. However, since being promoted to Triple-A, Varland has registered a phenomenal 1.69 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts over 21 innings. He's started four games and holds a 1-1 record.
Varland has a good fastball that can reach up to 98 MPH, along with a strong changeup, and an improving slider that sits in the mid-80s.
