Mets Calling Up Power-Hitting Prospect

The New York Mets are looking for a boost right about now. For the first time since April 12 — yes, just five days into the season — the Mets are no longer in possession of 1st place in the NL East. The Atlanta Braves have edged a half-game up on New York heading into play on Saturday.

They hope to get that boost from a 22-year-old elite power-hitting prospect, No. 7 on their team rankings.

Mark Vientos was selected in the 2nd round of the 2017 MLB Draft, and his power has really exploded the last couple of minor league seasons. He posted a .933 OPS with 25 home runs in 2021 across AA and AAA, in just 83 games. This season, he's crushing it again, with 24 HR, 72 RBIs and an .877 OPS. He's slugging over .500 for the second straight year.

As mlb.com prospects report notes, "his raw power will always make him a middle-of-the-order threat."

"Oh my goodness!!... Vientos has raw power that makes you drool! That was an absolute nuke!" went the call on the Syracuse Triple-A broadcast.

The Mets have lost four of their last 6 games, but really, are victims of the red-hot defending champion Braves making a blistering run. They're hoping that Vientos provides the jolt they need to get back on top.
