Boston Red Sox Pitcher Elects Free Agency

Earlier this week, the Boston Red Sox designated Jeurys Familia for assignment. The veteran pitcher went on to clear waivers and has now decided to become a free agent instead of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A.

Familia is now on the open market and will be hoping to find a new home before the season is over. The 32-year-old has had a very rough 2022 campaign, however, as he not only struggled with the Red Sox but also with the Philadelphia Phillies before heading to Beantown. In 48 games split between the two clubs, he had a 2-3 record to go along with a 6.09 ERA.

Familia's long MLB resume could result in another club taking a flyer on him. In 547 career games, he has a 34-28 record to go along with a 3.51 ERA. With that, he has 125 career saves and is a one-time All-Star.
