Yankees Lose Red-Hot Hitter To Broken Foot

It was an incredible comeback story. After two seasons of hitting in the .100s, Matt Carpenter remade his swing and caught on with the New York Yankees this summer, in a big way. Hitting .305 with a remarkable 1.138 OPS, he's become a huge part of the lineup.

Which made the sight of him suffering a fractured foot after fouling a ball off it that much harder to take—for Carpenter and the Yankees.

At first he tried to walk it off, and even finished the at-bat. But he knew something was seriously wrong. X-Rays showed a foot fracture.

"I knew something was wrong when I did it. But... My mindset is that it won't be the end for me here this year. I'm hopeful that I can come back and contribute."

There's no timeline at this point for any possible return this season.

The 36-year-old Carpenter has had an incredible run with the Yankees—15 HR and 37 RBIs in 47 games. But as the color analyst said on the broadcast, "last thing they need is this guy going down and missing time."

Unfortunately, he will be missing significant time.
