San Diego Padres Sign Ace To Massive Extension

It's a dream story for the hometown kid. After several days of negotiations, All-Star Joe Musgrove has agreed to a massive 5-year extension with the San Diego Padres.

The deal pays the San Diego kid $100M, and marks another huge notch in the Padres' belt on a Monday that also saw them acquire the best closer in baseball

Musgrove is 8-4 with an impressive 2.65 ERA this season for the Padres, earning his first All-Star nod. He also owns a stunning 114:27 strikeout to walk ratio.

So while two of his rotation mates, Sean Manaea and Mike Clevinger get set to hit free agency after the season, Musgrove stays put, with a contract that's similar to what other elite starters of his ilk got this past offseason (Robbie Ray with Seattle and Kevin Gausman with Toronto).

As noted by Jon Heyman, Musgrove's deal has a full no-trade clause for the first four years, and a limited one in the final year, 2027.
