Red Sox's Rookie Starter to Begin Rehab Assignment; Eligible to be Activated Next Friday

There were high hopes for the Boston Red Sox's top pitching prospect but the struggles and injury put a damper on those hopes.

Brayan Bello is healthy now, however, and will most likely begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend with Double-A Portland.

Bello suffered the injury, a groin strain, while working in piggyback relief last Wednesday against the Houston Astros.

The twenty-three-year-old top prospect was dominating in the minors this season, averaging 12.1 K/9. However, he has not been able to translate that success over to the majors yet, holding an ugly 8.47 ERA, 2.30 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts across 17 innings. He's walked 11 batters and allowed 28 hits across those innings.

In 88 innings in the minors this season, Bello posted a stellar 2.35 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a whopping 118 strikeouts. He held a 10-4 record as well.

The underlying numbers are still very good, and it's only a matter of time before Bello fixes his struggles and starts to see success again.

He should be activated next week.
