Red Sox Starter to Begin Rehab Assignment; Yet to Make Boston Debut
The Boston Red Sox signed him this past winter to a one-year deal, knowing he would not be available to them until mid-summer.
He's getting close now though.
Starter James Paxton is scheduled to throw another sim game on Friday and, if that goes smoothly, he should then head out on a rehab assignment. He hit 95 MPH in a sim game last week.
Manager Alex Cora sounded optimistic about Paxton the other day: "He's in such a good spot now that it's not about the arm. It's about the pitch mix, the breaking ball, all that. When those guys start talking about that, you know they're over the hump. It's good."

It has been more than 15 months since Paxton underwent Tommy John surgery, the second of his career. The thirty-three-year-old should be an option, barring any setbacks, for the Red Sox rotation down the stretch, most likely near the beginning of September.
Over his nine-year career, Paxton has played with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and the Mariners again in 2021, posting a 3.59 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 9.9 K/9 ratio across 754 innings.
