Chicago Cubs Release Shortstop
The Chicago Cubs have officially released Andrelton Simmons. The veteran shortstop is now a free agent.
Simmons was designated for assignment on Saturday, so this outcome appeared quite likely. The 11-year veteran was not going to accept a demotion to Triple-A and will now be hoping to sign with another major league club to round out the 2022 season.
Although Simmons sported a rough .173 batting average during his 34-game stint with the Cubs, other clubs will likely consider signing him. Keep in mind, he is a four-time Gold Glove Award winner and comes with an immense amount of overall experience. Let's see where he ends up from here. Could be a decent depth piece for a team pushing for a playoff spot.
