It's a tough blow for VerHagen, who signed a two-year, $5.5 million free agent contract with St. Louis this past March. He injured his hip soon after and never quite seemed to make a full recovery.
The thirty-one-year-old last pitched on July 13, and finishes his season with an ugly ERA of 6.65, 1.89 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 21 innings. He held a 3-1 record on the season.
Drew VerHagen is out for the season (right hip surgery). Oli Marmol: "He has the ability to be a really good pitcher for us. ... He never felt right all year. He was battling that hip."

Also, Tyler O'Neill will start in Game 2 tonight.

The Cardinals still believe in him as a pitcher and they hope that they can put his career 5.26 ERA behind him, and work on making him an effective pitcher, once healthy, next year.
