Whit Merrifield has been diagnosed with a bone bruise and ligament swelling in his right toe.
Whit Merrifield says he has a bone bruise and ligament swelling in his right toe. He’s in a boot and will take some time to heal. Today will be the first time in 553 games he hasn’t played, a #Royals franchise record.

It appears Merrifield is headed to the injured list and, as a result, his franchise-record 553 consecutive games played streak will come to an end.

The thirty-three year old is in a walking boot and expected to remain in one for the next few weeks, unlikely to return until after the All-Star break later this month.
This is a tough blow to the Royals as Merrifield was just starting to really heat up, hitting .286/.524/.899 with two home runs and three stolen bases over the last two weeks.
There was also a very good chance that Merrifield was going to be traded to a contending team at the trade deadline and, while this can still happen, the injury does not help the situation for the Royals.
On the season, Merrifield is batting .240 with five home runs, 36 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.
