Rangers Catcher To Have Season-Ending Surgery

With a torn flexor tendon in his throwing arm, Texas Rangers catcher Mitch Garver has decided he'd rather be ready to catch for Opening Day 2023, than to hit at half-speed only for the rest of 2022. With that, he's opted for season-ending surgery.

Garver said he had been injured since the offseason, which is why he's been forced to DH for most of this season. According to Rangers beat writer Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the 31-year-old catcher said that surgery was the only way for him “to be the player I want to be.”

The surgery will require about seven months of recovery time, so the only way to be fully ready for spring training in early 2023, was to go under the knife now. His procedure is scheduled for Monday.

Garver has hit just .210 this season with a five-year-low .710 OPS, along with 10 homers and 23 RBIs. He has a career .248 average and .815 OPS.
