MLB Rumors: Top 3 Landing Spots for Willson Contreras

Despite his desire to stay in the organization, Willson Contreras knows his days as a Chicago Cub are numbered. He saw what happened last season at the trade deadline, when all of his 2016 World Series colleagues were dealt as they approached their free agency.

The 30-year-old is having another All-Star season, with 14 home runs and an .844 OPS, and he's got plenty of suitors. Here's a look at three teams who could be leading the way for a Contreras trade.

Tampa Bay Rays

With the news coming down on Monday that 2021 All-Star Mike Zunino will be out for the season, the Rays' search for a catcher will intensify. Contreras makes a ton of sense here, as he could address both their need behind the plate, as well as their desire to add a power bat into the middle of their lineup.

San Diego Padres

Talks are already underway, as the Padres look to scoop up some help from the Cubs behind the plate, as well as in the outfield. But it's the 3-time All-Star Contreras that could really add a big boost to the lineup.

Cleveland Guardians

The Guardians have gotten practically no offense out of their catching this season, with Austin Hedges and Luke Maile both hitting below .200, while combining for 5 home runs and 16 RBIs between them. The team fancies itself as a playoff contender, just two games back of a Wild Card spot, and they could add a huge offensive boost by adding an impact bat like Contreras.
