MLB Rumors: 3 Potential Landing Spots For A's Catcher Sean Murphy
Sean Murphy is one of the prime assets left in the Oakland A's 2022 fire sale, and the catcher is receiving plenty of interest, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Murphy is the reigning Gold Glove winner at catcher in the American League, and his value as a pitch-framer and play-caller behind the plate has the attention of many contenders who could use a catching upgrade.
The 27-year-old's offense has really picked up of late as well. In his last 30 games, he's batted .318 with an .893 OPS, and overall he has 11 HR and 40 RBIs on the season.
Three teams who the A's should be speaking with about Murphy:
New York Mets
Murphy would be a major upgrade for the Mets, who have gotten paltry production from the catcher spot this season. And he's already got a fan on the New York pitching staff in Chris Bassitt, who was his batterymate on the A's for the previous three seasons.
Minnesota Twins
With starting catcher Ryan Jeffers out until September with a fractured thumb, the Twins' pitching staff has been left in the hands of Gary Sanchez for the time being. No doubt they'd love a defensive upgrade to the likes of a player like Murphy.
Tampa Bay Rays
Murphy seems like an ideal fit for the Rays. He's young, talented, and under team control for three more seasons (i.e. not too costly). The Rays do a lot of unconventional manouevering with their pitching staff, and a Gold Glover like Murphy would be a boon behind the plate.
