Mariners Release Veteran; Activate Outfielder From Injured List

The Seattle Mariners have optioned outfielder Justin Upton and reinstated outfielder Kyle Lewis from the injured list.

Upton has elected free agency.

The Mariners optioned Upton to clear space for the return of Kyle Lewis. However, because of Upton's tenure, he had the ability to refuse the option and instead join the free agent market. Over 17 games played for the Mariners this season, the thirty-four-year-old hit just .125/.208/.471, with one home run and three RBIs.

Kyle Lewis rejoins the Mariners' lineup after missing nearly two months of action with a concussion. The twenty-seven-year-old is reportedly feeling healthy now, with his symptoms dissipating and successfully completing multiple rehab games. He'll most likely begin in the DH role to start with. In 15 at-bats this season, Lewis has two home runs and three RBIs.
