Former Cy Young Winner, 5-Time All-Star Plans To Retire

With a Cy Young Award, 5 All-Star berths and a World Series title under his belt, the 14-year veteran of 2,123 innings, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher David Price, has announced that he's likely to retire after the 2022 season.

Price made his career by being one of the best starters in the sport from 2010 through 2018, before slowing down, and eventually opting out of the 2020 season due to the pandemic. He transitioned into more of a relief role in 2021, and this season, strictly out of the bullpen, the 36-year-old has a 3.20 ERA in 19.2 innings, with 11 K/9.

He told Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register that he's ready to hang up the cleats, but that his decision on whether to retire has always been based on his kids.

My (two) kids love it so much. That’s the only thing that makes me even think about playing any longer,” Price said.  “I always told myself I’d ask my son, ’Do you want daddy to play baseball or do you want daddy to be home all the time?’  I asked him before this year and he said, ‘I want you to be home.’ I said, ’Are you sure?’ He said, ’Yeah.’ Now when I ask him, he says, ’No, I want you to keep playing.’ “

He wraps up his 7-year, $217 million contract this season, yet another sign that he won't be back. If this is it for Price, he will be missed.

In addition to Los Angeles, fans in Tampa Bay, Toronto, Detroit and Boston all benefited from Price's incredible career.
