White Sox Claim Pitcher Off Waivers

The Chicago White Sox have claimed relief pitcher Parker Markel off of waivers from the Oakland Athletics today, as announced by the team.

As part of the claim, the White Sox also announced that they have optioned the right-hander to their Triple-A affiliate team, the Charlotte Knights.

Because the White Sox had an open spot available on their 40-man roster, the team did not have to make any additional moves to make way for the Markel acquisition.

Markel, whose full name might be one of the more difficult and silly names to say three times fast, has appeared in three games this season for the Athletics. In three innings of work, Markel has not allowed a single run and has given up only one single hit, although he has walked five batters.

During his time in Triple-A this season with the Las Vegas Aviators, Markel had a 3-0 record in 17 appearances, posting a 1.89 ERA, as well as striking out 28 batters in 19 innings pitched.

Already at 31 years of age, and in only his second season ever as a pro, Markel won't provide the upside that younger pitchers offer, but if he pitches well enough in Triple-A, the righty might have the opportunity to provide some depth to the White Sox bullpen.

With starting pitcher Lance Lynn set to return from injury soon—and because the Markel claim has left no available roster spots—the White Sox will have to make a decision in the coming days as to who they will move to clear the way for Lynn, who will be making his potentially final rehab start tonight for Charlotte.
