Tigers' Former No. 1 Overall Pick Shut Down
More bad news for the Detroit Tigers starting staff, as Casey Mize has been shut down from his rehab due to continuing elbow troubles.
Casey Mize (elbow sprain) continues to feel discomfort while playing catch at 90 feet, according to A.J. Hinch. He’ll be shut down while he seeks more medical opinion.

Of course, elbow problems automatically lead to talk of potential Tommy John surgery, but this is a different ligament involved, and there's no word just yet on whether that's an option for Mize. He'll be getting more medical opinions.
Mize had been out since mid-April with a sprained elbow ligament, but he was still feeling discomfort this week while throwing from 90 feet.
The 25-year-old was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 June Draft, and had started to show signs of starting to live up to that in 2021, registering a 3.71 ERA in 30 starts for the Tigers. But these elbow problems are concerning.
The Tigers are also without starters Eduardo Rodriguez, Matt Manning and Michael Pineda.
