Red Sox Burned With Unvaccinated Closer On Restricted List

A “personal choice” came back to haunt the Boston Red Sox Tuesday night. The Toronto Blue Jays scored two runs to walk it off, 6-5, in the bottom of the 9th off the BoSox’ second-best relievers, while their closer was back in Boston on the restricted list.

Tanner Houck had been lock-down since taking over the closer’s role several weeks ago. But he was forced to stay at home for this series at the Rogers Centre, as US/Canada border restrictions require unvaccinated travellers to quarantine for two weeks upon entry, in either direction. That made leadoff man Jarren Duran and closer Tanner Houck unavailable for this crucial intra-divisional series, in which Toronto will now go for the sweep on Wednesday.

With a 5-4 lead, first Tyler Danish was summoned in the 8th inning to try to hold down the lead, but after giving up a leadoff single in the 9th, the Red Sox went to Hansel Robles, who had failed in his closer try-out earlier this season. He failed again on this night, as Vladimir Guerrero walked it off with an RBI single after Bo Bichette had tied it with an RBI single of his own.

A big win for the Blue Jays; a night of what could have been for the Red Sox.
