MLB Rumors: 3 Dream Trade Targets For Mets

The New York Mets have outperformed even the wildest of expectations thus far this season, especially considering the absence of Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. On top of the NL East at 35-18, with a whopping 9.5 game lead on the Atlanta Braves, the Mets are sitting pretty. But that doesn't mean they aren't scouring the league for potential additions.

The Athletic's Tim Britton has suggested a list of trade targets the Mets should be honing in on as we head into the summer. Here are his 3 top dream trade targets:

High-Leverage Reliever: David Bednar

The Pittsburgh Pirates aren't sniffing the postseason in 2022, so the luxury of a lockdown closer like Bednar doesn't serve them as well as it would a contending team. But the Pirates closer (9 saves, 1.38 ERA, 12.1 K/9) hasn't even reached his arbitration years, so they still have plenty of years of control. Still, his value is sky-high right now, and the Mets could use another big-time arm in the bullpen.

It would take a heckuva prospects package to land him, so this one is a longshot.

Catcher: Willson Contreras

The production the Mets are getting from their current catching crop is ranked in the bottom five teams in baseball. Contreras, as Britton notes, would immediately vault them into the top 5.

The Cubs are in rebuild mode, and Contreras is the last of their big-name producers who can bring back a nice haul in a trade.

Starting Pitcher: Frankie Montas

This is, of course, a name that's been at the top of rumors for just about every team looking for a top-end of the rotation arm. The Mets already dipped into the Oakland A's fire sale during the offseason to bring in crafty veteran Chris Bassitt. Adding his former rotation-mate Montas would go a long way to solidifying the injury-riddled Mets staff.
