Mets Alonso and Marte “Avoid The Worst”

It could have been worse. Much worse. The New York Mets received the medical reports of their latest star players to go down with injuries, and MRIs and other imaging have determined that both Pete Alonso and Starling Marte are "day-to-day" and might both avoid the injured list.

Alonso, the league leader in RBIs, was hit in the hand by a pitch in San Diego earlier this week, while Marte, in the same game, sustained a quad injury. Both players woke up on Wednesday feeling much better, and there are no broken bones or muscle injuries.

“This is probably the best-case scenario for sure,” Alonso said. This from a man who had to literally kick out his overturned car windshield to escape a frightening car crash during spring training—and emerged with barely a scrape.

As for Marte, who uses his legs as much as anything to make a living, this is his first quad injury in the majors. “Thank God I feel good. It could’ve been worse. Right now it’s day to day. We’ve been working pretty much all morning to get it right and hopefully I’ll be back out there soon.”

The Mets have already overcome the long-term losses of their two ace pitchers Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer, to hold a runaway 7-game lead in the NL East, now sitting at 38-21.
