Giants and Phillies Complete Trade
With the demotion of starting catcher Joey Bart, the San Francisco Giants were left with only one catcher on the major league roster, sending them to the trade market in a hurry. Courtesy of the Philadelphia Phillies, the Giants have acquired a veteran backstop in Austin Wynns. In return, the Phillies receive lefty Michael Plassmeyer and cash.
Wynns is 31, and does have some major league experience over the past few years with the Baltimore Orioles. In 115 games across three seasons, he's averaged .216 with a .580 OPS. Not terribly impressive, but he's been on fire at Triple-A this year, posting a .365 average with a 1.004 OPS. He's popped 3 homers and driven in 20 in 33 games, and has gotten on base at an insane .504 clip. His numbers at AAA were similar in 2021.
Curt Casali will likely earn the promotion from backup backstop to starter in Bart's absence, with Wynns getting the odd chance to show if his Triple-A madness can translate to the majors this time around.
Plassmeyer is a project that the Phillies hope can turn around his poor showing thus far. The 25-year-old has a 7.38 ERA in ten starts this season at Triple-A.
