Diamondbacks Shortstop Shut Down; Seeking Medical Opinion

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed has been shut down from baseball activities, and will seek a medical opinion on the next steps.

According to The Arizona Republic's Jose M. Romero, Ahmed has been trying to work his way back from a recurring right shoulder injury, but recent events have led the team to put a stop to his rehab work in the minors.

Manager Torey Lovullo noticed that he "bounced some throws to first base in between innings of a recent game." The decision was made to have him see another specialist.

"He just felt like he was trying to gut things out and the shoulder just was not responding," Lovullo said. "It was just a little too much for him to handle, the workload.

"Sad, tough, tough conversation for me and him (Thursday)," Lovullo said of his talk with Ahmed. "You know, he means a lot to this lineup and especially on the defensive side of it."

The 9-year veteran hasn't played for the D-Backs since May 15th, and has only been able to suit up for 17 games this season, while posting a .231 average with a .702 OPS.

Geraldo Perdomo will continue to man shortstop for the D-Backs in Ahmed's absence.
