Blue Jays Catcher Suffers Broken Finger

With a .915 OPS, he was becoming a consistent threat to leave the yard in the bottom half of the Toronto Blue Jays' batting order. But instead, the bad luck continues for catcher Danny Jansen. He's headed back to the injured list, this time with a broken finger.

Jays GM Ross Atkins has reported that Jansen suffered a small fracture to his pinky finger after being hit by a pitch in Monday night's 8-0 win over the Kansas City Royals. Zach Collins is on his back up to the club from Triple-A to take his spot on the roster.

The 27-year-old Jansen started the season like a house on fire, batting .571 with two homers in the team's first 3 games. But an oblique strain forced him to miss over a month. He returned in mid-May and picked-up where he left off, with another HR.

Overall, in 19 games this season, he's hit 7 HR with 13 RBIs, and a .915 OPS.

Alejandro Kirk, on a tear of his own, will hold down the bulk of the catcher's duties while Jansen's finger heals.

As for whether super-prospect catcher Gabriel Moreno could be called on, GM Ross Atkins gave a standard evasive answer.

“Gabriel has been awesome," said Atkins. "He’s continued to improve. He’s in a really good spot and he’s very much in the mix for us.”
