Astros Sign Slugger To Massive 6-Year Extension

It was clear from the time the hulking slugger made his major league debut in a Houston Astros uniform: Yordan Alvarez is an offensive beast. Today, the Astros have locked up that beast with a massive contract extension.

MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal reports that the contract extension is for 6 years, at $115M, and kicks in next season. It takes Alvarez through his arbitration years, and even his first three eligible free agency years.

Jeff Passan notes that it's the biggest contract ever for a DH.

He's currently having another monster year at the plate, with 14 home runs, 31 RBIs a .941 OPS and .274 batting average.

Alvarez arrived in Houston as a 22-year-old in 2019, and merely hit 27 homers with 78 RBIs in just 87 games, posting an OPS of 1.067. He missed the 2020 season with knee problems, but came back last year with a 33 HR, 104 RBI season.

He also has an ALCS MVP to his credit, for leading the Astros to a 6-game series win over the Boston Red Sox last fall.
