Pirates Call Up Infield Prospect
The Pittsburgh Pirates have a desperate need in the infield, with both second base and shortstop being problem spots right now. So does this mean that shortstop Oneil Cruz, one of the top prospects in all of baseball heading into 2022 gets the call?
No, not quite. The Pirates have called up light-hitting infielder Rodolfo Castro from Triple-A Indianapolis. Castro was hitting .250 with 2 home runs and a .799 OPS, right around his career marks through several seasons in the minors. One of those homers, however, was a grand slam Tuesday night.

Cruz, on the other hand, is off to a painfully slow start at Indianapolis, hitting just .186 with a .632 OPS, two homers and 15 RBIs. He does have 8 stolen bases.
The Pirates have issues at both of the keystone positions, with SS Kevin Newman currently on rehab from a groin strain, and 2B having being split between Cole Tucker and Josh VanMeter, both of whom are hitting under .200. Tucker, in fact, has now been optioned to Triple-A.
