MLB Rumors: Alex Rodriguez Wants To Buy Marlins, One-Upping Ex-Owner Derek Jeter

Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter have been rivals for over 20 years. Even when they were teammates with the New York Yankees. Now, in a wild twist, there's a rumor that it all could spill over well into their post-playing careers, from an ownership perspective.

Jeter recently sold off his interest as a minority owner of the Miami Marlins after several years, without officially stating a reason. Now, as MLB Insider Jon Heyman tells it in the New York Post, "according to folks close to Rodriguez, the slugger, broadcaster, entrepreneur and Minnesota Timberwolves part-owner would be interested in buying his hometown Miami Marlins, if the financially-strapped team does become available."

Yes, A-Rod is from Miami, so it would make some sense from that standpoint. But also, implies Heyman, from the standpoint of it being a "chance to one-up Derek Jeter." Calling the ex-Yankees' shortstop an A-Rod "frenemy", Heyman says that Rodriguez "surely would relish the chance to succeed where Jeter ultimately did not."

Current owner Bruce Sherman isn't thought to be in the market to sell currently, and a source close to A-Rod says "his interest would depend on price.”

If anything does come to pass, however, this could make for some fun back-page fodder in New York.

Interestingly, it was only last week that A-Rod's nephew Joe Dunand homered in his first career at-bat with the Marlins.
