Joe Girardi: "I Never Worry About My Job!"
The Philadelphia Phillies had some high hopes coming into this season, with big splashy offseason signings like Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber.
But after another crushing loss Monday night, the Phils are 21-28, with 8 losses in their last 11, and the pressure is mounting on manager Joe Girardi. But is he worried about his job?
“I don’t worry about my job,” Girardi told reporters. “I’ve never worried about my job. I don’t worry about my job. I’ve got to do my job. It’s the business of being a manager. I don’t worry about it.”
But with one of the highest payrolls in baseball, one has to wonder how long the front office will wait to get this turned around.
As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic points out, however, even a new manager couldn't improve this Phillies team "without better defense and better relief pitching, and (president of baseball operations Dave) Dombrowski cannot snap his fingers and make those problems disappear."
It's shaping up to be an interesting summer in Philly.
