Cubs Call Up Red-Hot Double-A Prospect

The Chicago Cubs are digging a little deeper into their minor league system to bring in some help on the North Side. Christopher Morel is off to a rousing start at Double-A with the Tennessee Smokies, and now he'll get to make his big league debut.

The 22-year-old Morel has risen fast through the Cubs' system, and plays 3B, SS and CF. MLB.com prospects report says "He's the most versatile Cubs farmhand and one of the most athletic." He has plus-speed and power. On defense, he covers solid ground in the outfield and is a rangy defender on the infield across the diamond.

At AA this season, he's off to a .306 start in 28 games, with a .945 OPS, to go with 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and three stolen bases.

With injuries to Nick Madrigal, Nico Hoerner and Clint Frazier, as well as the struggles of Frank Schwindel and Patrick Wisdom, Morel could get a chance to show his stuff.
