Padres Slugger Calls Himself “A Waste Of An At-Bat”
With no home runs, a .143 batting average, and an even more woeful .167 slugging percentage and .481 OPS, there's no question that the season is off to an extremely sluggish start for San Diego Padres DH Luke Voit. And he knows it, calling himself “a waste of an at-bat right now."
As reported by Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Voit has been struggling with a biceps injury the last several days, and the DH says “It’s been bothering me for a while now. I just haven’t been able to get that extension that I want through the zone. I think I need to take a little bit of time. I don’t know."
But as for assessing his contributions to the team, Voit was blatantly honest.
“I feel like I’m a waste of an at-bat right now,” Voit said. “I’m not doing the team any good. I played through injuries last year and it’s really hard. I want to get back to being healthy. I need to provide for this team. I haven’t done a lot for this team and our lineup needs me, but they need me when I’m healthy.”
Voit has only one extra-base hit through 13 games, and, as Sanders reports, has recorded infield pop-ups in an astounding 30% of his plate appearances.
In fact, the only real noise Voit has made this season was a "dirty as f**k" slide (the words of Tommy Pham) against the Cincinnati Reds.
