Padres Sign Outfielder
The San Diego Padres have signed Shogo Akiyama to a minor league contract.
Akiyama was let go by the Cincinnati Reds this offseason but now has finally found a new home with the Padres organization. He will now be aiming to receive a call-up to the major league squad, but that of course will require him to put together some strong play in the minor leagues.
Akiyama appeared in 142 games with the Reds over the previous two seasons. During them, he had zero home runs, 21 RBIs, and a .224 batting average. It will be intriguing to see if he ever gets the chance to build on these career totals with the Padres. At worst, San Diego has added to their outfield depth with this signing.
