The former 2nd-round draft pick by the Cubs in 2017 was a highly-regarded prospect, and toiled in the club's farm system for a number of years before making his big league debut in 2021 for a brief showing. Abbott tossed 17.1 not-so-successful innings for the Cubs, allowing 13 earned runs, walking 11 and striking out 12, with an ERA of 6.75.
As a starter at Triple-A Iowa last season, he did manage to miss some bats, striking out 12.2 per 9 innings.
The Cubs designated Abbott for assignment last week, opening the door to this move, otherwise they would have had to release him.
In a corresponding move, the Giants have designated OF Jaylin Davis for assignment.
